Obituary for Arthur Stephen Hickman

Arthur S. Hickman of West Deptford, NJ passed away on February 17, 2018, at 87 years of age. Mr. Hickman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Arthur V. and Mary Hickman. He was raised in the Fishtown neighborhood of the city with his two sisters, Mary and Edith. Blessed with a beautiful smile, brilliant blue eyes, and an ebullient personality, Mr. Hickman met his future wife, the late Joyce Berle Hickman when she was a personal shopper and he a carpet department salesman for Gimble Brothers on Market Street in Philadelphia in early 1950. Romance bloomed and they married and settled in New Jersey where they raised their three children, Maryann, Diane and Geoffrey in West Deptford Township. Arthur became a sales executive for various nationally recognized business furniture manufacturers in Philadelphia and was considered by his peers the quintessential sales professional. The redesign of the global headquarters of Campbell Soup Company in Camden, NJ was one of the many premier office design contracts overseen by Mr. Hickman during his long career in the office furniture industry. He graciously motivated others in whom he saw the potential to succeed in sales and was the go-to man for his three children who pursued sales careers in his footsteps.

A devoted family man who never missed an athletic event in which one of his children or grandchildren participated, he was a knowledgeable and avid and vocal sports fan. Art's cheers of encouragement will be greatly missed by those to whom he became a familiar presence in bleachers, ballfields, and poolsides from West Deptford, East Greenwich, Leesburg Virginia and beyond.

In his retirement years, Arthur was able to further pursue his interest in sports, fitness and community activities at West Deptford's RiverWinds Community Center where he utilized his welcoming demeanor as a membership attendant until age 86. He was the recipient of a proclamation from the West Deptford Township Committee upon his retirement after 15 years of dedicated service to West Deptford Township. His always-present smile was often commented upon by the many members of RiverWinds who came to know him at the front desk. He referred to all he knew as "My Friend".

Arthur never grew tired of smiling, it was just a part of who he was. It will be that smile, wisdom and loving support which will be most missed by his family, his many friends and those whose lives he touched.

Predeceased by his loving wife of 57 years, Joyce, Mr. Hickman was the beloved father of Maryann Kintzing and her husband, Scott, of West Deptford; Diane Villecco and her husband Jerry of Mickleton and son Geoffrey Arthur Hickman and his wife Karen of Leesburg, Virginia. He will be greatly missed by his treasured grandchildren Candace Villecco Shemmer (Yadin), Hunter Kintzing (Joanne), Andrew Villecco (Jocelyn), Brent Arthur Kintzing, Jerad Villecco (Lauren) and Ian (Hailey) Hickman and Meredith Hickman as well as six great-grandchildren, Hunter and Finn Kintzing, Roman and Evan Villecco and Josephine and Eden Shemmer. He is also survived by his dear sister, Mary G. Yost and her husband Frank of Chalfont, Pennsylvania, and 15 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister Edith McGrother and her husband Joseph.
